Charger Classic at Suncoast: Top performances

RIVIERA BEACH — Suncoast Community High School is playing host to the 11th annual Charger Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Here are the top performances Friday:

Andre Weir (2020), Chaminade-Madonna

The 6-foot-9 senior made nine field goals on the way to 19 points vs. Giancarlo Rosado and Palm Beach Lakes. Weir spearheaded a Chaminade second-half charge after the Lions (8-2) had trailed 31-26 at the half. The ex-Northeastern University commit said, “I re-opened my recruitment. There’s a few schools recruiting me now. One of the bigger ones is Richmond. I’m just looking for the best fit.”

Ben Middlebrooks (2022), Westminster Academy

The talented 6-10 sophomore went for 27 points and 14 rebounds vs. Oldsmar Christian. Middlebrooks showed again that he can step outside and hit 3-pointers with two long balls. He went 7 for 7 from the free-throw line for the three-time defending state champions. Middlebrooks’ top scholarship offers are Florida, Florida State, Iowa State and Wake Forest.

Giancarlo Rosado (2020), Palm Beach Lakes

The 6-8 Florida Atlantic signee has re-made his body, dropping 36 pounds since playing for E1T1 on the EYBL travel circuit. “I just did that so my game could be more fluent so I could be lighter on my feet,” Rosado said. “When I was heavier I couldn’t really move as well, but now I can show my versatility.” Rosado said he made the change with discipline and diet. FAU likes that he can play inside and out. He knocked in 19 points in the loss to Chaminade. FAU, Lipscomb and Keiser had coaches in attendance.

Erik Pratt (2020), Park Vista

The 6-3 senior guard canned 7 of 15 from the field and finished with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals for coach Edwin James’ 9-3 Cobras. Pratt and John Saenz spearheaded an 8-0 run with 2:30 to play to give Park Vista a 49-42 advantage it would not relinquish. Pratt is being recruited by Western Oklahoma State, Broward College and St. Pete.

Xavier Scott (2022), Dwyer

With Dwyer trailing Edgewater 49-48, the young 5-11 guard baited Navaun Peterson into a foul while shooting a 3 with 4.6 seconds left. Scott calmly made all three free throws and Dwyer survived a hard-fought OT victory. Senior guard Courtney Grant led the Panthers (8-2) with 12 points. Keiser University is high on Grant, who sent the game to overtime with a field goal late in regulation.

Jordan Sears (2020), DB Mainland

Sears knocked in 18 points in the loss to Park Vista. He canned 7 of 10 from the field. The 5-11 Gardner-Webb signee added 4 assists and 3 rebounds.

Johnny O’Neil (2020), Chaminade-Madonna

O’Neil has grown to 6-8 and gives the Lions added height down low with Weir. He stepped out and drilled two 3-pointers on the way to 13 points and grabbed several key rebounds. Coach Andre Torres also used O’Neil on Rosado at times. He has offers from American University, Robert Morris, USC-Upstate, Florida Southern and Barry. O’Neil has taken a visit to American in D.C. 6-3 senior guard Justin Allen also played well and finished with 13 points.

Jerry Vaughn (2020), Oldsmar Christian

The 6-foot guard, who is a transfer from Cumberland Christian (Ga.), connected on seven field goals and got to the free-throw line seven times in scoring 21 points vs. Westminster.

Anthony Bradley (2020), Palm Beach Lakes

The 6-foot guard banged home multiple 3-pointers en route to a 20-point performance vs. Chaminade. It was just Palm Beach Lakes’ seventh game of the season.

Sam Rolle (2020), Suncoast

The senior guard led the way in the W over Palatka with 24 points. Sophomore Albert Garnett Jr. hit the game-winning 3 with 2.2 seconds to play.
