Senior Standouts at the Fall Festival – Rpt I

Josh Leonard, Bradenton IMG Academy: The 6’7 wing has an arsenal of offensive weapons.  He is solid in attacking the basket with the ball, is quick down the floor in transition, and displays a reliable perimeter shot on either side of the arc.  Leonard has the ability to rebound and rush the ball up the floor to start the break on his own.  He covers a lot of ground quickly on defense and is able to guard a variety of positions.

Jordan Page, Bradenton IMG Academy: The 6’4 guard spent time both on and off the ball.  The lefty is a high-level athlete with strength.  Page can blow by his defender or overpower him, whichever will work best in the moment.  He finishes over the rim in traffic, has a reliable mid-range game, and is an active rebounder at both ends of the floor.  Active hands and quick feet make him a solid defender.

James Nowells, Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian: The 6’1 guard did his best to offset the absence of Cayden Daughtry by being a versatile scoring threat.  Known primarily for his ability to drain shots from deep, Nowells found repeated success in attacking the basket and finishing plays, often with a bonus foul shot tacked on.  He was also helpful as a primary ball-handler and facilitator.

Quinton Mosley, Bradenton IMG Academy: The 6’3 guard was dialed in from deep on Saturday.  Mosley was five of seven from behind the arc, providing balance to the offense.  He knew instinctively where to be to get open shots from penetrating teammates.  Mosley also was quick to move the ball, notching a trio of assists in limited minutes.  His ability to play both guard spots should prove quite valuable this season.

Akol Nyak, Miami Columbus: The 7’0 senior hasn’t been regarded as much of a scoring threat to this point.  However, on Saturday he showed that his pairing with junior teammate Tai Bell as pick-and-roll partners can light up the scoreboard.  Nyak threw down numerous lobs at the end of those plays.  He also had plenty of putback points and showed he could score on the block if not played physically.  Nyak is quite the rim protector and rebounder at the defensive end.

Denver Turner, Hialeah Mater Lakes: The 6’4 guard has good size and quickness at the point guard position.  He takes care of the ball, makes good pass vs shot decisions and finishes well when attacking the basket.  Turner didn’t attempt any perimeter shots in the game we took in but his free throw form is good, so we believe that bodes well going forward.  He uses his length well to disrupt passing lanes and harass opposing ball-handlers.

Miguel Orbe, Hialeah Mater Lakes: A 6’2 Tennessee Tech commit, Orbe is a gifted perimeter shooter with deep range.  He is highly accurate off both the catch and the dribble.  Orbe continues to develop as a mid-range shooter as well as finisher around the basket.  No doubt his body will further develop on the collegiate level to make that happen.  Orbe has a high basketball IQ, plays with great confidence and energy, and is a willing passer and playmaker when the opportunity presents itself.

Whit Bynoe, Orlando Oak Ridge: A 5’10 senior guard, Bynoe is a silent assassin on the court.  His demeanor never changes and neither does his effort or production.  He scores well from deep, knows how to take advantage of poor closets to attack and score at the basket, and is quick to turn steals into scores when on defense.  Bynoe is savvy when it comes to taking what the defense gives him and take advantage of his opportunities.  He anticipates well in the press and is quick to double-team and rotate back to his assignment.

Bishop Winze, Orlando Oak Ridge: A 6’8 forward, Winze’s confidence seemingly grows with every game.  He has vastly improved as a scorer down low with basic but effective post moves.  Winze is a lob threat and putback artist on the offensive end and has good hands to catch tough passes on the move in ball-screen action.  He is fast up the floor in transition, is quick to outlet defensive rebounds, and challenges opponents’ shots at the basket.

Samfree Sarante, Miami Palmetto: A 6’4 guard, Sarante has the skills to play either guard spot.  He has good size, court vision, passing instincts, and ball-skills to run an offense as a point guard.  Sarante has three-level scoring ability, making it tough for defenders to play him for the drive or shot.  To top it all off, he is a reliable free-throw shooter, knocking down four straight in OT, two to tie and two to win.

C.J. Westbrook, Miami Riviera Prep: We only get to see one-half of a blow out win for Riviera Prep but saw enough of the 6’0 guard to see how his ability to score and create will help the Bulldogs.  Westbrook will be seeing a good amount of time at the point guard spot, something he hasn’t done that much of to this point in his career.  His ability to penetrate and make decisions will be key.  Westbrook is a mid-range monster and scores creatively at the rim.  He has quick hands and good instincts on defense.

Quincy Douby, Miami Riviera Prep: A 6’5 wing and Wake Forest commit, Douby is a smooth three-point marksmen that has developed his off-the-dribble game to great potency.  More quick than strong at this point, he has a quick first step to get past defenders and good body control and touch at the basket.  Douby is a willing passer and sneaky offensive rebounder.  He plays the passing lanes well on defense and covers a lot of ground quickly when he needs to help and recover.

Cory McPherson, Orlando The First Academy: The 6’0 senior has speed and quickness to spare, is a blur with ball, and can get rolling from deep if left unguarded.  McPherson is quick to push the pace, is a one-man press break, and finishes creatively in traffic at the basket.  He can knock down floaters over defenders or take the bump and complete three-point plays with regularity.  McPherson is a ball-hawk on the defensive end, forcing mistakes and quickly converting turnovers into points, often of the highlight variety.

D.J. Gaines, Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy: The 6’0 senior is competitive, wired to score, and both mentally and physically tough.  His speed, quickness, and ball-handling skills allow him to get almost any shot he wants from any level.  Gaines has the bounce to finish over the rim on breakaways.  He is a reliable shooter on either side of the arc and makes frequent trips to the foul line, where he is near automatic.

Kimario Sherman, Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy: A 7’2 senior, this is a large human.  That size belies a soft touch out to twelve feet and the ability to move pretty well on the court.  Sherman has a reliable jump hook going to his right and a complementary drop step going the opposite way.  At this level (any most likely the next), he can overpower opponents and score at will on the block.  He rebounds his area at both ends and is more of a shot changer and challenger than shot blocker on defense.
