Hoop Exchange Fall Player Preview – Rpt II

King McMillian, Hilliard – A 6’5 junior, McMillian shot the ball very well in the game we watched.  Whether off the catch or the dribble, he consistently knocked down shots from behind the arc.  McMillian made good pass vs shot decisions in transition, made plays on the offensive glass, and showed good defensive instincts both on and off the ball.

Alexander Alfonso, Miami Senior – A 6’5 senior, Alfonso showed great ability in getting to and scoring at the basket.  Straight dribble drives, floaters in the lane, putbacks and scores in transition put numbers on the scoreboard.  He had one strip of the ball-handler in front of him for a score that was quite impressive and later snuck inside and craftily converted an offensive rebound.  Alfonso tossed a couple of nice assists and was also active on the glass at both ends.

Andrew Ferguson, Orlando Evans – A 6’8 senior, Ferguson showed a lot of bounce and energy despite playing with knee-supporting device.  He made quite the impact when it came to rebounding, running the floor, and hustle plays.  Ferguson has a propensity for rebounding the ball on the defensive end and pushing the ball up the floor quickly.  His long strides get him rapidly from one end to the other for easy scores.  Ferguson has the ability to defend a variety of positions thanks to his length and footspeed.

Quincy Mosley, Tampa Specially Fit Academy – A 6’0 senior, Mosley is quite the scorer.  He opened up the contest we watched with a three, scored on a baseline drive the next time down court, and then finished his flurry with a deep three off the dribble.  Mosley is fast with the ball and is difficult to keep out of the paint.  His mentality is to score but he did show an ability to get the ball to open teammates for quality shots.

Kendall Davis, Parrish Community – A 6’6 senior, Davis has good ball-skills for a player his size.  He was very good at pushing the pace, advancing the ball quickly to teammates ahead of the defense, and handling and passing the basketball on the perimeter.  Davis got quality shots near the basket by cutting smartly into the lane, getting putbacks, and racing past the defense to score in transition.  He has good positional size and versatility at both ends of the court.

Franklin Okeke, Orlando Exclusive Prep – A 7’0 junior, Okeke was a force around the rim.  He scored inside and put back missed shots with emphasis.  When Okeke didn’t have the dunk available, he showed decent touch with either hand.  He rebounded his area well at both ends of the floor.  Defensively, he made it difficult to score in the paint, forcing penetrating guards to pass out to the perimeter, changing shots and swatting his fair share out of the sky.  Okeke moves well up and down the court for a guy his size.

Joshua Brem, Orlando Exclusive Prep – A 6’9 junior, Brem was much like Okeke but a little shorter and more physically developed.  Our notes indicate several scores around the rim as well as putbacks.  Brem opened some eyes with a high-post dribble-drive past an unsuspecting defender that resulted in a bucket.  He was also quick to get into passing lanes and come up with a couple of steals.  Brem didn’t show anything in the way of generating offense away from the lane but didn’t need to in this setting.

Jahmar Smith, Orlando Oak Ridge – A 6’3 junior, Smith is solidly built, athletic, and relentless at both ends of the floor.  He excels at scoring inside the arc.  He uses his strength to get past defenders to finish in traffic at the basket.  Smith has a highly reliable mid-range game as he hit several shots off the bounce.  He seemingly has an innate ability to determine when to pull up and when to drive all the way to the bucket.  Smith rebounds well for his size and knows how to use his strength to keep opponents away from the ball and basket without fouling.

Ka’Shawn Gill, Orlando Southeastern Prep – A 6’5 sophomore, Gill played at least four games on Sunday (two was the norm).  We saw him play three of those four times and each time he was productive.  Strong and athletic with three level scoring ability, Gill took advantage of whatever the defense gave him.  He knocked down jumpers if the opponent sagged off and blew by defenders if they were too close.  Gill converted a couple of “and one” opportunities and hit free throws with a high rate of success.  He has a scorer’s mentality but also plays with an edge and a good size chip on his shoulder.

Isaiah Brown, North Tampa Christian – A 6’0 sophomore, Brown was one of those players that made the most of his opportunities.  He connected on some tough drives, made multiple mid-range shots off the dribble, and connected on in-rhythm threes off the catch.  Brown was quick to fill a lane in transition and if the ball didn’t come his way he was prepared to grab the rebound or pressure the rebounder.  He garnered a couple of steals and scores in that fashion.

Karl Mullins, Wellington Sports Academy – A 5’9 junior, under-estimate him due to his size at your own peril.  Mullins has a high basketball IQ, good speed and quickness with the basketball, and an understanding of how to take advantage of what the defense gives him.  He has good range on his perimeter shoot, makes good decisions with the ball when attacking the paint, and is alert to get the ball quickly to cutters as well as into the post.  Mullins comes across as a pass first, not pass only, point guard.
