Joshua Skinner, Team Breakdown FL 17U: The 6’3 senior out of DME built on his productive play from last weekend’s Travel Team Jamboree. Skinner’s strong body and high-level athleticism allow him to play much bigger than his listed size. He is a strong driver and finisher, pursues rebounds out of his area at both ends of the floor and, despite not having the most consistent perimeter shot, makes free throws at a high rate.
Kevin Simmons, Team Breakdown DMV 17U: The 6’3 senior out of Gillion Academy in Virginia was at his best when attacking the rim off the dribble. Simmons has a strong frame, abundant athleticism, and plays with great effort. He didn’t take but a few perimeter shots due to his success at the basket but he made most of the ones he did attempt. On defense Simmon has active hands and feet and covers a lot of ground quickly.
Moussa Sy, Showtime Ballers 17U: The 6’8 senior out of West Oaks Academy in Ocoee seemingly gets better each time we see him play. Sy is active as a rebounder at both ends of the court, snaring missed shots well out of his area. He runs the floor, has a quick leap to put back missed shots by teammates, and plays physically without fouling. Sy does a good job of protecting the basket when opponents attempt to penetrate and has the ability to switch out and guard smaller defenders on the perimeter in ball-screen situations.
Avery Jones, SE Elite 3SSB 15U: The team was playing up a level and the 6’6 freshman from The Rock School in Gainesville was completely unfazed. Jones shows great potential for playing a point-forward type of role at the next level. He handles the ball well, sees the floor and makes good decisions with the basketball. Jones shoots the ball well from the perimeter and has the tools to be a grab-and-go rebounder. He will gain athleticism as his body matures, making even more versatile and a match-up problem for opponents.
Gary Scott, Twin Cities Elite 16U: A 6’6 sophomore at Tallahassee Rickards, Scott impressed with his ability to use his frame to carve out space inside. He gathered offensive rebounds and putback points in bunches. Scott simply has a nose for the ball coming off the rim and seems to be in the right place at the right time all the time. He made a couple of perimeter shots to keep defenders honest. A developing athlete, as Scott physically matures, he will gain quickness and bounce.
Artem Kovalchuk, MJB Elite 3SSB 15U: A 6’1 freshman at IMG, Kovalchuk has a high skill level and plays with great confidence. He is a legit knockdown shooter from deep and proved to be a solid finisher at the basket both in transition and when attacking in the half-court with the dribble. Physically tough and savvy, Kovalchuk shows both a high floor and high ceiling for development.
Demetrick Smith, 1 Family 16U: The 6’5 sophomore from Orlando Edgewater is another player that gained notice at the TTJ and enhanced his reputation this past weekend. He excels as a rebounder, defender, and “glue guy” that makes plays no matter where he is on the court. Smith is an alert defender, runs the floor, and quickly converts opponent’s turnovers into points. While not a point guard, he is a good ball-handler and distributor out on the perimeter. Smith has the tools to score inside and out as well as defend a variety of positions.
Jayden Strawder, MBJ Elite 3SSB 16U: A 6’7 sophomore at Orlando Christian Prep, Strawder displayed his ability to score inside this weekend as well as be a rugged and physical rebounder at both ends of the floor. Strawder plays to his strengths, has a good touch around the rim and will not be outworked on the glass. He is a decent free throw shooter, showing the potential to become an offensive threat when facing the basket in the near future.
