Class 2A Preview

Next Up in our classification previews is Class 2A.  Annually this has became one of the most talent-laden and competitive classifications.

Favorite: Miami Riviera Prep

The Bulldogs have won three straight state titles and look exceedingly strong this season.  A combination of high-level guard play and functional size inside not only make them title contenders but candidates for national recognition as well.  Mason Fuentes, a 6’1 senior, attacks the basket relentlessly, has a respectable outside shot and can run the offense if need be.  He is committed to Stetson.  Myles Fuentes, a 6’2 junior, is solid at the point guard spot.  He gets teammates where they need to go, gets the ball to them at the right time and place, values the basketball, and can score when called upon.  Randy Livingston, a 6’2 senior, has shown this fall that he is a sniper from deep, knows how to use his speed and quickness to get to the rim and score, and is a tough on-ball defender.  Quincy Douby, a 6’4 junior, scores in a variety of ways, helps out on the glass, and will defend multiple positions.  Laron Mack, a 6’7 sophomore, has perimeter skills but can also rebound and score in traffic.  Anton Saffin, 6’7 junior, 6’10 sophomore Oliver Bishop, and 6’9 freshman Myles Leone, can all run the floor, protect the basket, and make the most of their offensive opportunities.

Regional Favorites: Jacksonville Providence (Region 1); Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic (Region 2); Tampa Prep (Region 3)

Providence still has a lot of young players on its roster and lost several of the “bigs” that were so impressive in the summer but still has plenty of talent.  Solid guard play from the likes of 6’2 senior Luke Mayberry, 6’2 senior Marvin Christie, 6’1 junior Ryan Gornto and 6’2 sophomore Will Stewart will propel them.  Santa Fe Catholic out of Lakeland was the state runner-up last season.  Returning 5’10 senior Toby Lane is the key.  He makes the game easier for his teammates, scores and distributes well, and most of all elevates his game in crunch time.  Tampa Prep surprised many with last season’s playoff run.  It feels like the Terrapins are set to take the next step.  We really like the inside/outside combination of 6’7 senior Kaii Levy and 6’4 junior Myheir Session.

Best Player: Jasen Lopez, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna

The 6’0 Lopez is also a standout football player and has committed to play that sport at FSU but fully intends to play hoops as well.  A scoring dynamo, he was considered the top offensive player in the Under Armor Association by one scouting service.  A high hoops IQ to go along with three-level scoring ability sets him apart.

Pre-Season All-State: Lopez; Myles Fuentes (Riviera Prep); Toby Lane (Santa Fe Catholic); Kyle Blair (Orlando The First Academy); Marvin Christie (Jacksonville Providence)

Fuentes has been playing varsity ball and it is no coincidence that Riviera Prep has won a state title each year.  He is finally starting to get the national respect he deserves.  As mentioned above, Lane has the ability and talent to carry a team on his shoulders.  Blair, a 6’10 junior, has improved tremendously since last season.  He is a scoring threat inside and classic rim protector.  Christie is an explosive athlete, generates excitement with above the rim finishes, and should flourish in Providence’s up-tempo system.

Better Than Advertised: Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy

The seemingly never-ending high school transfer portal has hit Westminster Academy hard since the end of last season.  Still, it would be unwise to overlook this program.  D.J. Gaines, a 5’10 junior, can fill it up and the team has some topflight freshmen in 6’5 Desean Clayton and 6’5 Ayden Metelus.  The program is steeped in success so it won’t fall far if at all.

Don’t Sleep On: Luke Mayberry, Jacksonville Providence

The 6’2 senior has been raised in a basketball culture and it shows.  He’s skilled enough to play either guard spot, scores and distributes at high rate, and knows when to push the pace and when to throttle it back.  His senior leadership will be key in getting Providence a spot in the final four in front of their hometown fans.
