50th CITY OF PALMS CLASSIC: GAME 5 – CAPE CORAL MARINER VS. (AZ) MILLENNIUM

This is the first game in the consolation bracket.  Mariner suffered a large loss at the hands of Westminster Academy out of Fort Lauderdale while Millennium simply ran out of gas in the final period against Paul VI out of Washington, D.C. in the event’s opener.

Mariner got on the board first with a three from Corey Hunter.  Millennium responded with a transition dunk from Kingston Tosi and a three from Cameron Holmes of Millennium gave the Tigers a 5-3 lead with just over a minute gone by.  Moving forward with the game tied at 7-7, Millennium got some breathing room as Brayden Barrett hit two free throws and Holmes scored on the break.  Mariner answered with a free throw and then drew to within one after a transition basket from Marcus Kelley.  Holmes put back a Millennium miss and a possession later Sam Franklin scored to give the Tigers a 15-10 lead with just under a minute to go in the first quarter.  Mariner answered with a bucket inside by Justin Lewis and two free throws from Kelvin Jimenez to close the first period down just one, 15-14.

Millennium ran off eight unanswered points to start the second quarter, five from Barrett to make the score 23-14, forcing a Mariner timeout.  It worked as Mariner peeled off six successive points to get to within three, 23-20, with 4:23 left in the half.  The Tigers pushed their lead backup with a 6-2 run at that point as a three from Quincy Everson made the score 29-22.  A transition slam by Everson pushed the Millennium lead to nine, but five consecutive free throws by Mariner brought them back to within four at 31-27 with 1:40 to go.  Millennium finished out the period with a 9-1 run with a trio of threes to push its lead to double-digits, 40-28.

A three from Millennium’s Everson and steal and slam by Holmes pushed the Tiger lead to 45-28.  Millennium led by as many as eighteen, 53-35, with 5:03 to go in the third.  An 8-0 run by Mariner cut the margin to ten, 53-43, with just under four minutes to play.  However, that would be as close as the Tritons got as Millennium finished the quarter with a 13-5 run, again draining multiple threes, to go into the fourth quarter up 66-48.

Neither team seemed to put much effort into the final period.  Mariner scored just seven points and Millennium just nine points.  The final score in Millennium’s favor was 75-55.

Holmes led Millennium with 24 points.  Both Kingston and Barrett each added 13 points.

For Mariner, Hunter led the way 19 points while Jimenz added 13 points, Lewis finished with 12 points, and Kelly tallied 11 points.
