The second game of the Signature Series features one of the better local teams in Punta Gorda Charlotte taking on Buckhorn from Alabama. The Bucks feature Caleb Holt, a 6’6 sophomore that is already considered one of the top players in that state regardless of class and possibly one of the best ever when it is all said and done.
A three by Charlotte’s Jahyere Chin got the Tarpons on the board first. Buckhorn’s Jeremiah Wilson connected on pair of free throws in reply. Chin hit another three to give Charlotte a 6-2 lead with 6:16 to play. From there it was all Buckhorn, most notably Holt. He put together a personal 10-0 run, highlighted by a slam after a cut to the hoop. Jeremiah Wilson and Josh Wilkerson each knocked down threes for Buckhorn before Holt came back with a steal and slam. After Wilkerson dropped in a baseline drive with four seconds left, Buckhorn had finished the opening period with a 19-0 run to make the score 21-6 in favor of Buckhorn.
The second quarter was tough sledding for both teams. Neither team scored until Buckhorn’s Jackson Ramsey drained a three with 4:37 left to play. Chris Cornish finally got the Tarpons on the scoreboard with a putback. For the next couple of possessions, the teams traded baskets. The only problem was those baskets were threes for Buckhorn compared to twos for Charlotte. With 2:13 left to go until halftime, Buckhorn led 30-12. Another four quick Buckhorn points were gradually offset by another Cornish putback and at the half, Buckhorn led by twenty, 34-14.
Buckhorn continued its assault in the third and fourth quarters. They were up 51-22 at the end of the third and ultimately won by the score off 72-37.
Buckhorn was led by Holt with 21 points, followed by Wilkerson with 13 points and Wilson with 11 points.
Cornish finished with 10 points for Charlotte.
