Notables from Saturday at The Grind Session Orlando: Rpt II

Caleb Zhu, CN Royal Crown School: A 6’10 senior committed to Elon, Zhu pretty much had his way with the ball once he got it inside.  While maybe not an explosive athlete, he had a solid frame, good hands, and nimble feet.  Zhu showed he can hit shots to fifteen feet facing the basket, move well up the floor in transition, and make his presence felt as a post defender and rim protector.  He converted many baskets as a result of dump-off passes from penetrating teammates.  Zhu rebounded his area well at both ends of the floor.

Jayden Robinson, CA DNA Prep: A 6’3 sophomore, Robinson hits the floor with a scorer’s mentality.  He will take what the defense gives him but if the shot clock is winding down, Robinson can manufacture points.  Though a bit on the thin side, he isn’t afraid to challenge defenders at the rim.  Robinson is an effective three-point shooter off the catch and uses his length to score over defenders from the mid-range area.  He plays with both confidence and short-term memory.  Robinson can slide over to the point if necessary as he is solid with the ball and is quick to get it to teammates for better shots.

Terrence Burri, TX iSchool: A 6’7 senior, he was given the unfortunate task of trying to slow down Marcis Ponder, who probably has six inches and sixty pounds on Burri.  Ponder may have gotten his, but Burri never backed down and contributed a 14 point/12 rebound double-double of his own.  He came up with some putback points, hit on a few drives, and converted his free throws at a high rate.  While Burri didn’t have the opportunity to demonstrate any perimeter skills, his stroke from the line and lack of turnovers when handling the ball on the wing gives some hope that the transition to wing will be a smooth one.  He proved to be a capable defender without fouling.

Willie Burnett, VA Gillion Academy: A 6’6 senior headed to Mississippi State in the fall, Burnett is a creative scorer that can be counted on to go on a “heater” at least once a contest.  He had two of those in the win on Saturday.  When that happens, what looks like a “crazy” shot off the bounce on either side of the line goes down with frequency.  Burnett has good footwork, crafty handles, and a knack for drawing fouls.  Sometimes all the defender can do is shake his head and head down the floor.  Burnett is a better passer than given credit for and can be disruptive in the passing lanes on defense.

Noah George, AZ Bella Vista Academy: A 6’4 senior, George seemingly had a hand in all things good for Bella Vista.  He created tempo, collapsed the defense with his drives, and got the ball where it needed to go.  George has three-point range on his shot, scores through contact at the basket, and makes good shot vs pass decisions on the move.  He is quick to come up with loose balls and instantly go from defense to offense to get easy points.  George rebounds well for his size, has some versatility as a defender, and plays with great effort at both ends of the floor.

Kenyon St. Louis, NC Winston-Salem Christian: A 6’2 sophomore, the young point guard has a good feel for the game and plays with a good understanding of pace.  Currently, he seems more adept at driving the ball, reading the defense, and then making a decision as to whether to score or assist.  His three-point shot didn’t fall in the game we took in but the form and mechanics were fundamentally sound.  St. Louis handles the ball well vs pressure and makes opponents pay for double-teams by moving the ball quickly to open teammates.  Solid on the defensive end, he has active hands and feet and works hard to keep opposing ball-handlers in front of him.

Tahj Saragba, WV Huntington Prep: A 6’7 junior, Saragba is a long lefty with plenty of bounce.  While his perimeter shot is a bit cringe-worthy, his ability to score around the basket and get putback points is more than noteable.  Saragba is quick off the floor with his shot, usually lofting it over the defender just getting into his jumping motion.  Saragba is fast down the floor in transition, is a constant lob threat at the rim, and will convert quick one and two-dribble drives when the opportunity arises.  He is a physical post defender that can step out and defend on the perimeter in ball-screen action.

Aiden Groce, Southeastern Prep: A 6’2 junior, Groce has the ability to provide instant offense.  Possessing an accurate three-point shot, he is very effective off the catch by always being shot-ready and having a quick release.  Groce uses the perimeter shot to set up drives to the basket and he has become adept at hitting floaters and getting shots into the basket in traffic.  He’s arguably a combo guard but Groce spends more time off the ball than on.  A good athlete with a solid frame, he puts in work on the defensive end and is quick to loose balls and long rebounds.

Treymaine Belanger, Southeastern Prep 2: A 6’8 senior committed to Austin Peay, Belanger has big man size but guard skills that allow him to play effectively on the perimeter.  He is a tough matchup because at his size he can see over the majority of defenders when running the point but then take the opponent inside, post up, and score.  At the defensive end, he is difficult to pass over or around and does a decent job of helping then recovering back to his assignment.  His perimeter shot wasn’t falling on Saturday, but we have seen him when it has.  When that shot is falling, Belanger is an even tougher cover.
