Wall-to-Wall Basketball all day today as the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches Team Camp rolled into Day Two. This is a snapshot of what we took in today.
Jacksonville Providence 43, Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer 35
Two very good teams struggled to put points on the board in the first game of the day (8:30AM). Providence led just 8-6 after one quarter of play but Dwyer was never able to mount any consistent attack to keep Providence from feeling threatened on the scoreboard.
Providence was led by 6’3 rising sophomore William Stewart with 16 points.
Dwyer was paced by 6’5 rising sophomore Torre Washington with 17 points.
St. Petersburg 64, Lecanto 55
St. Pete jumped on top early, leading by ten after one quarter and 31-13 at the break. Lecanto never quit and with two minutes remaining in the contest was down just four, 50-46. St. Pete resumed control from there, scoring seven unanswered to put the game out of reach.
St. Pete was led by 6’5 rising sophomore Nijaun Harris with 33 points.
Lecanto got 23 points from 6’1 rising senior Braylen Moore.
Orlando Christian Prep 57, Clearwater Carrollwood Country Day 40
The first half was an intense battle and OCP led by just two at the break, 22-20. A 22-9 third quarter in favor of OCP gave them breathing and they coasted the rest of the way.
OCP was led by 6’2 rising senior Josh Theus with 15 points.
Ayan Bhadouria, a 6’5 rising junior, led Carrollwood with 17 points.
Miami Belen Jesuit 58, Port Charlotte 35
Belen led by just two after one period and 20-19 at the half. Things started clicking for them as their trapping defense and ball/player movement offense started yielding results. Port Charlotte struggled to manufacture points and Belen won going away.
Lucas Diaz, a 5’11 rising senior, led Belen with 15 points.
For Port Charlotte, Marcus Nestor, a 5’10 rising junior, knocked down 24 points.
Winter Park Lake Howell 56, Citra North Marion 40
North Marion looked to have this game locked up early, leading 14-5 after one period and 28-14 at halftime. Later in the third quarter, Lake Howell knotted the game at 34-34 and took off from there.
Lake Howell as led by 6’8 rising senior Ethan Diaz with 18 points.
For North Marion, 6’6 rising senior Justice Phillips had a team-high 14 points.
Oviedo 78, Miami Westminster Christian 21
It is always disappointing when games turn out this way. Pick a category, and Oviedo simply had a whole lot more of it.
Carter Oden, a 6’1 rising junior and Aiden Demeglio, a 6’2 rising senior, each scored 14 points for Oviedo.
Branden Fragela, a 5’10 incoming freshman, paced Westminster with 5 points.
Newberry 73, Fort Myers Evangelical Christian 46
Evangelical plays a run-and-gun style with five-man substitutions every minute. They were able to keep within range of Newberry in the first half, trailing just 38-27. Things got away from Evangelical Christian in the second half and Newberry took advantage of those mistakes and misfires to win handily.
Henry Mathias, a 6’0 senior, led Newberry with 20 points.
For Evangelical Christian, 5’10 rising junior Zach St. John scored 15 points.
Jupiter 65, Bradenton IMG Academy Gold 56
IMG’s superior size gave them the advantage early on and the Ascenders led at the half 28-20. Jupiter’s offense came alive in the third quarter, tying the game at 32-32 midway thru the period and extending that lead to 41-35 heading into the fourth quarter. IMG made a run and tried to foul at the end to get back in the game but it was to no avail.
Zach Fleming, a 6’1 rising senior, and Brandon Collum, a 5’9 rising junior, each scored 14 points for Jupiter.
For IMG, Ahmadou Touray, a 6’10 rising sophomore, finished with 18 points.
Orlando Evans 67, Tallahassee FSU School 52
We pretty much missed the first quarter as we took a dinner break. We missed some good basketball as Evans led 21-20 after one quarter. Florida High kept it close, down 47-43 heading into the final period. Evans size and depth took control in the fourth quarter.
Jakai Hardy, a 6’0 rising sophomore, had 10 points for Evans in the three quarters we took in.
Jordan Smith, a 5’10 rising sophomore, had 12 points in that same amount of time.
Tallahassee Leon 44, Weston West Broward 42
West Broward seemed to have this game under control as it led at every period end, it biggest lead at 36-28 going into the fourth quarter. Midway thru the fourth Leon knotted the score at 36-36 and things stayed interesting from there. Leon took a lead but a West Broward three with just seven seconds to play tied the game at 42-42. After a timeout, Leon got the look it wanted but the shot was off. Fortunately, a Leon player jumped high and quicker than his West Broward counterparts, tipping in the miss just before the final horn sounded.
Keon Greene, a 6’4 rising junior, led Leon with 12 points.
For West Broward, 6’3 rising senior Stefan Frisby tallied 16 points.
