Owasso pulled off a stunner in the first round, downing Long Island Lutheran, a Nike EYBL Scholastic program. Oklahoma’s defending state champ will have its hands full with a hyper-athletic Oak Ridge team that reached the century mark in the first round.
Jalen Reece, a 6’0 senior got Oak Ridge on the board first with a three twenty seconds in. Jalen Montonati, a 6’7 junior answered for Owasso with a long two. Jamier Jones, a 6’6 senior put back a miss for Oak Ridge but Montonati tied the score at 5-5 with a three. This was indicative of how the first quarter would go. Oak Ridge had a 13-10 lead until back-to-back buckets by Montonati gave Owasso its first lead at 14-13. Oak Ridge connected on a mid-range jumper from Reece but five straight Owasso points game them a 19-15 lead. Oak Ridge got a bucket inside from 6’7 senior Zay Jones to make the score 19-17 in favor of Owasso after one period of play.
Owasso was able to maintain its lead early in the second quarter, up 23-20 with just over a minute gone by. At that point, Oak Ridge drained a trio of threes one from 6’7 senior Treyvon Maddox, one from Jones and one from 6’3 senior Willie Jackson to take a 29-23 lead. Owasso broke the drought with a bucket but Jones hit four point play to stretch the Oak Ridge lead to 33-25 with 3:12 let in the half. Owasso recovered with five straight points to get to within three, but Oak Ridge drained another three to go up six. Montanati had a chance to get that margin to three when fouled on a last second three but could only hit one of the three free throws. At the break, Oak Ridge led 36-31.
Things continued to stay tight in the third quarter. For every run that Owasso made. Oak Ridge had an answer. With 3:17 left and Owasso within six at 48-42, Oak Ridge ripped off seven straight points as Mosely hit two free throws and then a three and Jones threw down a dunk in transition. Oak Ridge now led by double-digits 55-42 with a little more than two minutes left in the period. Montanati scored on a drive to stop the bleeding but Oak Ridge countered with a drive from Reece to make the score 57-44 in favor of Oak Ridge going into the final period.
It was all Oak Ridge in the last stanza. In fact, Owasso scored zero field goals in the fourth, making only six free throws in all. The speed and athleticism of Oak Ridge simply wore Owasso down and Oak Ridge heads into the semis with a 73-50 victory.
Oak Ridge was paced by Jamier Jones with 23 points while Reece and Mosley each scored 18 points.
