City of Palms Fifth Place Semi-Final: GA Grayson vs. AZ Millennium

It’s a cross-country battle with Grayson taking on Millennium.  Grayson is coming off a humiliation at the hands of Columbus the night before while Millennium had Montverde on the ropes Thursday night before falling.  Millennium may have had more time to bounce back but Grayson may have more motivational fuel.

Millenium scored the first four points of the contest behind a drive from 6’8 senior Kingston Tosi and a steal and score from 6’1 freshman Peyton Washington.  Grayson finally got on the board with a score inside by 6’6 junior Caleb Holt.  This began a back-and-forth affair as Millenium would score to keep a two-possession lead only to have Grayson respond.  Millennium biggest lead as 13-7 after a three-point play by 6’6 junior Cameron Holmes with just under four minutes to play.  Grayson slowly whittled the lead down and with under a minute to play, Jacob Wilkins a 6’9 senior for Grayson was fouled in transition.  He knocked down both free throws to tie the game at 16-16 and that was the score after one quarter of play.

Like the first period, Millenium scored the first four points of the second.  This time, Grayson responded with a 9-2 run, highlighted by a three from 6’5 senior K.J. Garris to go up 25-22 with just over five minutes to play in the quarter.  This time it was Millennium’s turn to respond to adversity.  They put together a 9-3 run of their own, getting five points from Tosi in the process to go up 31-28 with just under three minutes to go.  Grayson briefly took back the lead but with the score tied 35-35 and under a minute to play, Grayson ended the half with an 8-2 run highlighted by a buzzer beating three from half-court to take a 43-37 lead into the break.

Early in the third quarter, Millenium was within four, 46-42.  At that point, Grayson put together a 12-5 run, five coming from 6’2 freshman Blaze Johnson, to expand their lead to 60-47 with just under three minutes to play.  Millennium scored the next four points, but Grayson closed the out the third quarter with a 7-3 run, spotlighted by a three-point play from Garris, to lead 67-54 going into the final period.

Millennium looked like it was back in contention with a 5-0 run to start the fourth, a bucket inside by Tosi and a three from Holmes to make the score 67-59 with just under seven minutes to play.  Grayson put an end to that notion, reeling off six quick points featuring a fierce slam in transition by 6’9 senior Jayvon Rampersant, to push their advantage into double-digits, 73-59, with just over three minutes to play.  The nail in Millennium’s coffin was back-to-back threes by Garris.  Grayson gains redemption from the previous night’s loss to win big 85-68.

Grayson got 22 points each from Holt and Wilkins as well as 20 points from Garris.

Tosi finished with 30 points, while Holmes added 19 points and 6’2 senior Quincy Everson finished with 10 points.
