City of Palms Classic: Game Six – DC Paul VI vs. Fort Myers Canterbury

Paul VI out of the DC suburbs of Virginia is the top seed while Canterbury lies about three football fields from the Southwest Florida State College campus.  Hopefully, the game will be better than the “experts” predict.

No doubt the Canterbury faithful would liked to have stopped the game and taken a picture of the scoreboard up 2-0 after 6’5 sophomore James Bryant scored the first points of the contest.  The good times didn’t last as Paul VI ripped off eight straight points.  The teams traded baskets to make the score 10-4 in favor of Paul VI with just over five minutes to play.  Things went from bad to worse for Canterbury as Paul VI ended the quarter on an 11-1 run to make the score 21-5 after one quarter of play.

Somehow, Paul VI cranked things up in the second quarter.  With the score 26-10, Paul VI reeled off twelve straight points to go up 38-10 with just under three minutes left in the period.  Canterbury cut into the lead with a three but it was only a mild cut.  Paul VI ended the half with a 7-0 spurt to make the score 45-13.

To no one’s surprise, Paul VI kicked in the running clock with five minutes left, up 51-16 in the third quarter.  At the end of the third period, the score was 58-23.  Paul VI would win comfortably, 76-27.

Paul VI was led by 6’11 junior Garrett Sundra with 12 points and 6’6 junior Darren Harris added 10 points.  Eleven of twelve Paul VI players scored.

Brisun Hammermeister, a 6’5 freshman, led Canterbury with 10 points.
