Notables from the FABC Boys Showcase Week 2 Day 1 – Rpt II

Isaiah Bridges, Pompano Beach Highlands Christian: A 6’4 incoming freshman, Bridges has the size and savvy to effectively play either backcourt position.  The lefty is solid with the basketball, quickly advances it via the pass or dribble, and always keeps his head up and alert to make a play.  Bridges is a solid driver and finisher at the basket.  His perimeter shot is reliable from fifteen feet and in.  He will knock down open threes if given space.  Bridges moves his feet well and has active hands on defense.  Further physical maturity will elevate his abilities in all areas of the game.

King McMillan, Hilliard: A 6’4 rising junior, McMillan is a prolific three-point shooter.  He has a quick release and is always prepared to shoot when receiving the basketball.  McMillan has a solid complementary drive and score game to go along with his perimeter shot.  He takes long strides to the rim, protects the ball, and has good touch and body control around the basket in a crowd.  McMillan generally makes good pass vs shot decisions and is quick to get the ball to open teammates for better scoring opportunities.  He has some length and bounce, using his physical traits well when it comes to rebounding and defense.

Cadynce Tolbert, Pensacola Booker T. Washington: The 6’2 rising junior may not have an obvious position but he makes plays of all types all over the court.  He is a tremendous leaper that grabs rebounds over bigger opponents, gets a lot of tips and deflections as opponents don’t realize the extent of his athleticism, and covers a lot of ground quickly on defense to come up with steals that turn into scores.  Offensively, he is a scoring threat from mid-range and in, rising over defenders for jumpers in the lane and at the basket.  Despite his size, he can defend a variety of positions thanks to his physical gifts.

Miles Morrell, Lakeland Victory Christian: A 5’10 rising senior, Morrell makes up for any perceived lack of size with toughness, determination, and deep range on his perimeter shot.  He routinely makes shots well past the high school three-point line.  Morrell will attack the defense on the drive but more often than not he is looking to collapse the defense and kick the ball out to an open shooter.  He is very quick to loose balls and long rebounds, quickly converting from defense to offense.  Morrell likes to push the pace in transition and consistently looks for teammates that will finish above the rim and make a momentum-shifting play.

Gabe Alonso, Miami Dade Christian: A 6’1 rising senior, Alonso takes a savvy approach to the game, taking what the defense gives him and not looking to make things complicated.  He is a reliable shooter off the catch, penetrates the defense off the bounce with a plan, and is alert to deliver the ball quickly to open teammates with better shot options.  Though not wildly athletic, Alonso is quick enough and understands how to maneuver defenders out of position and/or get them off balance to make a play.  He is an active communicator at both ends of the court and works hard on defense.

Joe Joseph, Jacksonville Bishop Kenny: A 6’5 rising senior, Joseph has some filling out to do physically but he is a capable shooter from distance and a surprisingly good passer.  Joseph is quicker than he looks and is willing to take some punishment when attacking the basket off the dribble.  He keeps his head up, locates teammates and quickly gets them the basketball.  Joseph doesn’t mind getting physical when going after rebounds or playing defense.

Noah Lara, Miami Coral Park: A 6’4 rising junior, Lara has a wide, solid, and strong frame.  He knows how to use it when it comes to attacking defenders off the dribble, either overpowering them or bouncing them off with a spin move to get the ball up and into the basket.  Lara also uses that size and strength well when it comes to pursuing offensive rebounds, subtly moving opponents out of the way then quickly sticking the ball in the basket.  He dribbles and passes the ball acceptably on the perimeter and will make a deep shot or two if left unattended.  Lara uses his strong frame to bump cutters and keep ball-handlers from where they want to go with the ball.

Azaol Brown, Jacksonville Bishop Snyder: A 6’9 rising junior, Brown is definitely more project than prospect at this point.  However, he has size and with time on his side, Brown has the potential to rapidly develop into a legit D-I player.  Brown gets up and down the floor well in transition, owns his rebounding area at both ends, and can score inside if not played physically.  A seasoned observer can tell that he is still working on his timing to challenge shots inside and well as step out and defend on the perimeter.  The physical tools are there and so it is just a matter of time and desire.

Wol Deng, Pompano Beach Highland Christian: A 6’7 incoming freshman, Deng brings a lot to the table for such a young player.  A good athlete with size, Deng has some ball skills as well.  He is comfortable with the ball on the perimeter, can drive and score with a few dribbles, and get the ball to teammates should the defense cut him off.  Deng did not attempt a perimeter shot in either of the two games we saw, but his success at the free throw line suggests that won’t be an issue.  He is quick to the offensive glass, often dunking putbacks.  Deng excels on the defensive end, using his length and foot speed to come up with steals that quickly become points for either him or a teammate.  He anticipates well, challenges shots at the basket, and defends a variety of positions.
