Posted on: February 15th, 2013, by Cory Rollins

After a one year absence, the state of Florida will be represented at the prestigious McDonald’s All American Game.  The rosters were unveiled yesterday on ESPNU for the 36th Annual Boys All American game.  Montverde Academy teammates Kasey Hill and Dakari Johnson were chosen along with Bonifay Holmes County standout Chris Walker.   Texas and California edged out Florida for the most All American selections with each state having four players selected for the game.

Posted on: November 19th, 2012, by Cory Rollins

We conclude our look at the boy’s preseason by releasing our 2012-2013 Preseason Dandy Dozen.  This list is equivalent to the Boys All State regardless of class.  Top ranked Montverde Academy has four players named to the Dandy Dozen which solidifies the fact that they are loaded with talent.  Five players remain unsigned/committed while seven have sealed the deal with their respective schools.  Only three (D’Angelo Russell, Joel Berry and Malik Price-Martin) of the players are underclassmen.  Price-Martin reclassified from 2013 to 2014 while Dakari Johnson moved up in class to 2013 earlier this month.  While some freshman and sophomores in the state will be good in the future, NONE are ready to be placed on the Dandy Dozen.

INDEPENDENTS PREVIEW

Posted on: November 7th, 2012, by Cory Rollins

Projected Top Team: Montverde Academy

The Eagles have two of the top seniors in the state in 6’1 PG Kasey Hill and 6’10 C Dakari Johnson along with highly ranked junior WG D’Angelo Russell, and one of the best coaches in the country in Kevin Boyle.  Add in top transfers 6’9 senior BF Devin Williams (a top 100 national player) and 6’6 junior wing Justin Bibbs from Ohio and talented holdover 5’11 senior Miguel Cartegena and this is definitely one of the top teams in the country.  They face a strong schedule with a trip to the City of Palms and two TV games on ESPN but hopefully they can get thru it unscathed, get to the National High School Invitational in April and this time win it all.

If There Were a Final Four: Montverde Academy, Gainesville The Rock School, Jacksonville Arlington Country Day, Oldsmar Christian

All but Montverde will play against each other on a home-and-away basis as well as the Sunshine Independent Athletic Associaton (SIAA) state tournament so at least there will be some determination as to who could play Montverde for the title “Best Team in the State”.  The Rock may be the deepest and most talented of the bunch.  ACD has reloaded with a number of transfers, most notably 5’7 senior Aquille Carr.  However, we heard a rumor this morning that Carr has already left ACD.  We will be working hard to confirm if the rumors are true.  Finally, Oldsmar didn’t just rebuild, it reloaded with D-I caliber players including 6’1 PG D.J. Bowles and 6’9 C Tony Nunn, both seniors.

Top Senior: Kasey Hill, 6’1 PG, Montverde Academy (committed to University of Florida)

Hill is very talented

Hill has been one of the best nationally in his class since the 6th grade when he played varsity basketball for Mount Dora Bible.  It is hard to believe we’ve been watching him for that long.  Hill is definitely the leader of a talented Montverde squad.

Top Junior: Dakari Johnson, 6’10 C, Montverde Academy

Johnson didn’t play last year for Montverde after transferring from Elizabeth, NJ St. Patrick’s.  He’s a force inside at both ends of the court.  He spent some time with USA Basketball this past summer and looks more than ready to dominate in this his junior season.

Top Sophomore: Alex Owens, 6’8 BF, Oldsmar Christian

Alex is a talent but some off-court issues forced him away from basketball as a freshman.  Now at Oldsmar Christian, it is hoped that the structure of the school will allow Owens to get back on track.  After watching him play with E1T1 this summer, it is evident that Owens oozes potential with his length, athleticism, and developing skill set.

Top Freshman: Jean Michel Tiene, 6’7 BF, Sarasota Impact Academy

We first noticed Tiene playing for the Nike Team Florida 14U team this summer.  However, he really showed out at the program’s Workout in the fall.  Aggressive and strong, he’s a bull of a rebounder and has a knack for scoring in the lane.

Ten Players to Watch

1) Kasey Hill, 6’1 Sr, G, Montverde Academy

2) Dakari Johnson, 6’10 Sr C, Montverde Academy

3) D’Angelo Russell, 6’4 Jr G, Montverde Academy

4) Joel Embiid, 7’0 Sr C, Gainesville The Rock School

5) Dante Buford, 6’8 Jr F, Jacksonville Arlington Country Day

6) D.J. Bowles, 6’1 Sr G, Oldsmar Christian

7) Boubacar Moungaro, 6’6 Jr F, Bradenton IMG Academy

8) Akolda Manyang, 7’0 Sr C, Jacksonville Potter’s House

9) Alex Owens, 6’8 So F, Oldsmar Christian

10) Jean Michel Tiene, 6’7 Fr F, Impact Academy
