We had the good fortune of traveling to Montverde Academy last night to watch a pair of nationally-ranked teams take on each other. Except all the players are on the same team. Montverde Academy is so deep this season that it could split the team in half and both teams would nationally ranked. Essentially, the Purple vs. Gold scrimmage at Montverde Academy is akin to a City of Palms contest, just with not as much intensity.
However, Montverde has been hit by an injury bug. Karrington Davis, a 6’6 guard from St. Louis sat out with a minor knee issue but should be back soon according to the coaching staff. Jordan Mitchell (hip) and Makhel Mitchell (foot), both juniors but unrelated, were unavailable for the game. Sophomore Joseph Bamasille from Virginia had a knee brace and crutches. His timetable to return is uncertain.
The main players for the Purple Squad were 6’7 senior R.J. Barrett, 5’11 senior Trevin Wade, 6’3 junior Trae Broadnax, 6’9 senior Kevin Zhang, and 6’10 senior Filip Petrusev.
For the Gold Squad it was 6’4 senior Michael Devoe, 6’4 senior Andrew Nembhard, 6’10 senior Alex Kotov, 6’9 junior Makhi Mitchell, and 6’6 sophomore David Petrusev.
Devoe opened up the game with a three pointer just after the opening tap. Barrett responded with a lob jam at the other end and it was game on. The Gold squad led 17-12 at the four minute mark Devoe and Nembhard proved to be an effective combo. That lead extended to ten points at 31-21 with two minutes to play in the half. The double-digit lead didn’t last as the Purple squad closed out the period with a 6-0 run to get within four at 31-27.
The second period was a back and forth affair. The Gold squad led 40-32 with eight minutes left in the period. Behind Barret and Zhang, the Purple squad put together 14-5 run to take a 46-45 lead with 4:40 left in the period. From there the teams would trade baskets and with thirty seconds left the game was tied at 54. Both teams had their opportunities but neither could capitalize. So we headed into overtime.
In the two minute OT, Devoe scored on a drive to give Gold a lead but Zhang responded with a transition basket to tie it up. It looked like the Purple squad would take home a win after Broadnax nailed a three with thirty seconds to play. After a time out, the Gold squad’s Kotov found himself open on the perimeter and drained a three of his own with ten seconds remaining. Purple put the ball in the hands of Barrett but he had to give it up after a double team. He eventually got it back but with too little time to get a good shot off. The coaching staff decided to end the game tied at 59 instead of inviting the injury bug to bite again.
